Winter in the Calamuchita Valley

Andrey and I took a walk down to the river yesterday afternoon. It was our first walk since we came back from Russia. We missed most of the winter this year and in a month from now it will be Spring. I am looking forward to that.

Unfortunately we have to get through August and the winds that are blowing. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to take a walk. No wind! But during the day is a different story. I have grown accustomed to the wind because we also have terrible August winds blowing in South Africa. Here in the valley it is a different kind of wind. It is icy!

To get back to my walk. I love walking down to the river. It is only 300m from Hostel Tinktinkie and such a nice walk. It is still very dry but I was surprised to see that we have a lot of water in the river. We took some photos and I breathed the fresh and clean air. Roll on summer! Last night I posted this photo on our Facebook Fan Page and many of our visitors responded. I am including some of the responses here.

Judging from the comments, visitors have fond memories of this bridge. We hope that future visitors will also enjoy this beautiful part of Argentina!

Hostel Tinktinkie Events for August

August is an exciting month for us at Hostel Tinktinkie! It is time for a Rally again and sport enthusiasts will love the `Rally Regional de Trapadas`that is taking place on 11 and 12 August in our beautiful valley. Two days of adrenaline, dust and a lot of action! Argentinians love Rallies and I am sure there will be a lot of people attending the shows.

On 29 August the very popular band `La Barra` will be in Santa Rosa de Calamuchita. They are regulars in the Calamuchita Valley and have a huge group of followers. Be sure to book early and rock the night away!

On a more personal note: Andrey and I are still in Russia and we will be flying home within the next two weeks. Another week for us in Kaliningrad and 3 days in the beautiful Moscow before we make the gruesome journey of 5 days back to Argentina!

If you want to book don`t despair! The hostel is open and our manager Pichi will gladly take your bookings and treat you with our famous hospitality!

Last days of summer

Summer is quickly coming to an end. In fact on 21 March, Autumn will be here. I took a ride with the scooter and found a spot at one of the `beaches` in town.

There were people making asado and enjoying the afternoon sun. I love the smell of  barbeque. That is one of the things I miss when we have winter…no asado! It is too cold and people stay inside.

It is amazing how nature is changing to accommodate autumn. The leaves are starting to turn colour and a cool breeze is blowing.

I will miss summer but I am also looking forward to photograph the marvelous colours of autumn.

Storms and strange weather

The weather this year has been strange to say the least. January 2012 was incredibly hot and humid. To make things worse the wind was also hot. No rain. February saw tropical storms and March have surprised us all with a lot of rain. We are entering the last days of summer and on 21 March Autumn will officially start.

Yesterday the wind picked up and when I looked outside the window I saw the sky turning black. This didin`t look good and I started to close all windows and shutters. A storm was coming our way.

It didn`t take long before buckets of rain started to pour down. We were playing cards in the kitchen and every now and then mopped the water up that was creeping through underneath the door.

The storm lasted for about an hour and just as sudden as it started, it stopped.

From outside the hostel we could hear the water rushing in the stream 50m from us. We rushed to go and have a look. We were astounded by the amounts of water that were in front of us. The water circled around small trees and looked angry. I didn`t want to be in this water.

We took some photos and decided to go down to the river to see what was happening there. Ad suspected the river had a `closed` sign, which meant cars, bikes and people cannot cross the river. It is too dangerous.

We stayed there for a while and then headed back to the Hostel. Amazing how the climate is changing and I suspect this will be a cold winter.

Pizza and movie night at Hostel tinktinkie

We decided early in the morning to make pizzas for our guests today. Now that we have our own bread maker we have discovered so many things to make with it, including our own pizza base! This is really delicious!

Pizza in Argentina can be a little boring so we normally add our own flair to make it more exciting. Mozzarella cheese, ham, olives, tomato paste, fresh tomatoes and garlic – and beer!

It was really good! We had a great time eating together and Luke and Sam mentioned that it felt like being at home with friends and family.

That is the atmosphere that we are trying to create at Hostel Tinktinkiebeing at home.

The guys were in the mood for a movie and seeing that we have British guests here we decided to watch In Bruges. This is one of our favorite movies and  Luke hadn't seen it.

We all had a good laugh and before we knew it the pizza and movie night was over!

Last night I was privileged to watch this spectacular sunset. I caught myself many times just staring at this! I have said this many times before but I will say it again: "God is the most creative Artist!"

I hope you enjoy it is as much as I did!
